CMP Research and Development activities in each business sector
Linking basic and applied research to build product value
CMP conducts both basic research in the coatings field that aims to discover new principles and innovative materials, and applied research that uncovers the causes of specific issues and formulates optimal solutions.
Equipped with advanced measurement and testing facilities, CMP’s R&D department pursues these complementary areas with a medium- to long-term focus.
The results of this basic and applied research are used to develop new products, improve the performance of existing products, create new value through environmental initiatives and other innovations, and explore new market segments.
Marine coatings
CMP has established itself as the leading Japanese manufacturer in marine coatings. CMP’s service network currently spans more than 105 locations in 35 countries worldwide, forming a robust global support chain.
Our technical capabilities, which span a wide range of marine-related markets such as coatings for large vessels, boats, yachts, fishing boats and nets, are an essential pillar of the global shipping industry.
Research and development for clean performance
Following the international convention banning the use of organotin compounds (International Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti-fouling Systems on Ships) in antifoulings enacted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in September 2008, CMP became an early pioneer in the research and development of tin-free antifoulings. Today, CMP continues to develop environmentally friendly coatings that help improve fuel efficiency while also offering robust antifouling performance in marine zones throughout the world.
As well as using this research to develop various tin-free hydrolysis antifoulings, we are developing biocide-free antifoulings that use coating surface energy to prevent fouling. This research is primarily undertaken by CMP’s R&D department in Otake City, Hiroshima Prefecture.
Research and development for energy efficiency
CMP is developing and refining coatings for new-build vessels, including environmentally friendly anti-corrosive coatings, and products that simplify and reduce labor demands during the coating process. CMP is developing products that combine improved workability and consistent quality to reduce on-site workloads and improve project efficiency.
CMP is also committed to meeting the demands of overseas markets by developing and refining products tailored to the specific service environment and working conditions of individual countries.
Research and development for environmental and durability performance
Compliance with international environmental regulations, such as volatile organic compound (VOC) emission regulations and IMO coating standard for ballast tanks, is a key area of research at CMP. CMP is developing a range of high solid coatings, solvent-free coatings, and water-based coatings that combine environmental performance with durable performance.
This research allows us to offer a range of highly reliable coating technologies that support the entire lifecycle of a vessel.
Industrial coatings
CMP draws on technology and expertise cultivated over many years to offer total solutions for a wide range of applications, including production plants in a range of sectors, steel structures, and the construction sector.
In the woodworking and building materials segment, our extensive technical expertise and proven track record—built on a history of developing Japan’s first amino-alkyd coatings*—are used to incorporate the latest technologies such as UV (ultraviolet light) curable coatings and offer products and coating systems tailored to a growing variety of new materials.
* Due to evolving market demands, amino-alkyd coatings were retired from the CMP line-up at the end of 2000, after a history spanning over half a century.
Heavy-duty coatings
CMP is developing coatings that remain environmentally friendly while meeting market demands for long-life anti-corrosive performance, superior weather resistance, and enhanced resistance to contamination.
CMP is also committed to the development and refinement of coatings with specialized technological requirements, such as radio wave absorption coatings, heat reflective coatings, and underwater curable coatings, creating solutions across a wide range of industry sectors.
Architectural coatings
CMP has secured a valuable market share in coatings for wooden building materials, such as residential floors, by consistently developing and refining its products to meet customer needs, while also focused on developing coatings for inorganic building materials.
Notably, for wooden building materials, CMP has been developing water-based coatings and solvent-free coatings that comply with regulations on total VOC emissions. CMP has also applied UV curable technology developed for architectural coatings across various other product segments, expanding the scope of applications for this technology.
This research and development are primarily undertaken by CMP’s technology and research department in Yasu City, Shiga Prefecture.
High-performance coatings
CMP is expanding into new growth sectors, such as touch panels and display monitors, by developing plastic films and durable coatings that prevent fingerprint marks on plastic parts and reduce UV light transmission.
Container coatings
In container coatings, CMP is quick to respond to customer requests, improving resistance to dirt and contamination and developing and refining its products, including coating specifications. CMP also conducts research and development into environmentally conscious solutions such as low-odor and water-based coatings.
CMP’s container coatings are primarily developed through collaboration between the technology department in Shanghai, China, and the research department in Otake City, Hiroshima Prefecture.
Research and development for new markets
CMP is developing coating systems and coatings with reduced VOC emissions (including powder coatings and water-based coatings) for existing customers, but also advancing research with a view to entering new market sectors.
Research and development for international markets
With its industrial coatings, CMP is also targeting international markets such as China, South Korea, and Southeast Asia, conducting research and development based on the customer demands and operating conditions of each market region.
Polymer materials for coatings
CMP conducts research and development into the polymer materials that play an essential role in bringing improvements in coating performance and reducing costs. The results are used to create new products through CMP’s in-house polymer manufacturing and the development of new coating polymers.
Based on the research results, CMP can investigate and identify product specifications and production methods tailored to customer requirements, and add value in areas such as environmental performance. This approach has allowed CMP to bring a wide range of coating products to market, including coatings for vessels, industrial applications, and containers.

Research and development infrastructure
CMP’s R&D department, which is responsible for basic and applied research and coatings product development, is equipped with the latest measurement and testing facilities. With a medium- to long-term outlook, the R&D department conducts research and development ranging from basic research into coating materials to developing products with new mechanisms and functionalities.
Also, to ensure that customer needs are properly integrated as part of product development, the R&D department maintains channels of communication with the sales department. The results of this research and development are not only used to improve the performance of existing products, but also to add new value through environmental initiatives and to expand into new market segments.
